About
SNAP-8 is a synthetic peptide of eight amino acids used in leave-on skincare for the look of fine expression lines around the eyes and forehead. Its cosmetic ingredient name is acetyl octapeptide-3. It is a longer version of the cosmetic peptide Argireline and is sold as a milder topical stand-in for the wrinkle-smoothing effect of botulinum toxin. Creams and serums that contain it are ordinary cosmetics. The raw powder is sold gray-market with no finished-product safety oversight. It is not an approved drug. The injectable use that some sellers imply has no evidence behind it.

Dosing
SNAP-8 goes into leave-on products as an ingredient solution used at 3% to 10% of the formula once or twice a day. The solution is itself only 0.05% pure acetyl octapeptide-3. A finished serum therefore holds roughly 0.0015% to 0.005% actual peptide. No injectable dose is established. The subcutaneous figures sold online are invented and disagree with each other.

Half-life
No plasma half-life has been established. SNAP-8 is used on the skin and has no human or animal pharmacokinetic study behind it. The half-life numbers on peptide-selling sites have no source and should not be trusted.
Side effects
- Mild stinging or tingling shortly after application
- Localized redness around the eyes or forehead
- Dryness or itching in some users
- Rare allergic contact dermatitis on sensitive skin
- Eye irritation from direct contact with the eye area
- Unknown systemic and infection risk if research powder is injected
How it works
SNAP-8 is built to mimic the free end of a nerve protein called SNAP-25. SNAP-25 is part of the SNARE complex. That complex is the machinery a nerve cell uses to release the chemicals that carry its signals. Some of those signals tell facial muscles to contract. The loose peptide is meant to compete with real SNAP-25 and weaken how the machinery assembles. The nerve would then release less transmitter. The muscles that crease the skin would relax a little. Botulinum toxin acts on the same protein but destroys it outright. SNAP-8 at most gets in the way and wears off. The laboratory support comes from longer SNAP-25 fragments and from the shorter hexapeptide it extends rather than from SNAP-8 itself. Whether enough crosses intact skin to reach muscle is unproven.
Research quality
The evidence specific to SNAP-8 is thin. Its main wrinkle claim comes from a supplier technical sheet rather than a peer-reviewed paper. That test ran 28 days in 17 women using a cream at the 10% ingredient level and had no control group or blinding. The often-quoted 63% figure was the single best responder in that group. The group average was closer to 35%. One published serum trial mixed acetyl octapeptide-3 with several other peptides and cannot isolate what SNAP-8 alone does. The mechanism itself rests on longer SNAP-25 fragments and the related hexapeptide rather than on SNAP-8. Penetration data exist only for that shorter relative. About 0.22% of an applied dose stayed in the outer skin layer and almost none reached deeper. No independent trial has isolated SNAP-8's effect.
Warnings
- Cosmetic recognition applies to finished topical products and does not make SNAP-8 an approved drug or injectable medicine
- Raw powder and research-labeled product carry no established human dose, sterility standard, or safety record
- Injecting reconstituted powder risks infection or a sterile abscess with unknown systemic effects
- Avoid applying SNAP-8 to broken, infected, or freshly treated skin
- Keep SNAP-8 away from direct eye contact because eye-area skin irritates easily
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding safety has not been studied for SNAP-8
