About

Selank is a Russian anxiolytic peptide built as a stabilized version of the natural immune peptide tuftsin. It has been an approved medicine in Russia since 2009 for generalized anxiety and stress-related conditions. It is sold over the counter there. It calms anxiety without the sedation or dependence of benzodiazepines. It is not approved anywhere else. It reaches people outside Russia as a gray-market research chemical used off-label for calm and focus.

Dosing

The Russian nasal-spray product is dosed at 2 to 3 drops in each nostril three times a day for a two-week course. That comes to about 900 to 1,350 mcg a day. Off-label community use of the reconstituted powder is lower at around 250 to 500 mcg per dose once or twice a day by nose or under the skin. It is short-acting so users redose within the day. Users usually run it for a couple of weeks and then pause. Online guides list wider and more precise figures that trace to sellers rather than the label or a trial.

Half-life

Selank clears from the blood within minutes and breaks down into smaller peptide fragments. No reliable half-life figure has been published. The precise numbers on vendor pages are not backed by a study. Its calming effect lasts for hours. That comes from downstream brain changes rather than the peptide staying in the blood.

How it works

Selank works through several actions. It slows the enzymes that break down enkephalin. Higher enkephalin tone is tied to its calming effect. It also shifts the expression of GABA-receptor genes. That eases anxiety like a benzodiazepine. Its binding site appears to be different though it may partly overlap. This may be why sedation and dependence have not been reported. It is a relative of the immune peptide tuftsin and also nudges immune signaling. A small study suggests it raises BDNF in the rat hippocampus.

Research quality

Selank has real human trials. The evidence is modest and almost entirely Russian. The main trial compared it with a benzodiazepine in about 62 people with generalized anxiety and found a similar calming effect. That trial was small and open-label with no placebo group. Laboratory work supports its effects on enkephalin breakdown, GABA-receptor gene expression, and immune signaling. A raised BDNF effect rests on one small rodent study. Western trials and large modern studies are absent. It is well tolerated in short courses and no dependence has been seen. No study set out to test for dependence or long-term safety.

Warnings

  • Selank sold outside Russia is not regulated so identity, purity, and strength vary between vendors
  • It acts on the GABA and enkephalin systems so combining it with sedatives, opioids, or serotonergic drugs is a mechanism-based caution rather than a proven interaction
  • Its tuftsin-like immune activity is a theoretical reason for caution in autoimmune or active immune conditions with no reported immune harm
  • Avoid it in pregnancy, breastfeeding, and children since the safety data are too thin
  • Long-term safety is not established and almost all human data come from short two-week courses
