Total amount versus strength
A vial can be described two ways, by its total amount or by its strength. Both numbers describe the same vial. The app fills in whichever one you do not enter. It is easy to mix up the two when you add a vial.
Two ways to describe a vial
When you add a vial, What do you know? lets you enter it as a Total amount or as a Strength.
Both options describe the same vial. Pick the one you know.
Total amount is the whole vial
Total amount is the whole vial. Enter the total powder and the total liquid.
A 10 mg vial in 2 mL is 10 mg and 2 mL. The app works out the strength, which is 5 mg/mL.
The total amount is everything in the vial, not a single dose.
Strength is a concentration
Strength is the same vial written as a concentration. Enter the compound per mL and the total liquid.
5 mg/mL across 2 mL is 10 mg of powder. The app works out the total for you.
Choose Strength when the number you have is a concentration like 5 mg/mL.
mg is not mg/mL
These two units look alike and mean different things.
mg is a quantity. It is the whole amount of powder in the vial, like the 10 mg here.
mg/mL is a rate. It is how much powder sits in each milliliter, like the 5 mg/mL here.
A dose is measured in mg too. That is why the total amount gets read as a single dose. Check the unit before you type a number.
What 5 mg/mL means
5 mg/mL means that for every 1 mL of BAC Water in the vial, you have 5 mg of your compound.
Most insulin syringes are marked U-100. On a U-100 syringe, 1 mL holds 100 units. So for every 100 units you draw, you have 5 mg, which is 5000 mcg.
That works out to 50 mcg in every unit. At 5 mg/mL, a 20 unit draw is 1 mg.
Same vial, either way
10 mg in 2 mL and 5 mg/mL are the same vial.
The Total amount side shows the strength as 5 mg/mL, the same vial as the Strength side.

The ruler reads 20 units, which is 0.2 mL. That is the 20 units the strength works out to. The vial gives 10 full doses at that draw.
