Adding a pen

There are two ways to add a pen. One goes by the pen's total strength and volume, like a vial. The other counts a fixed number of set doses. This guide sets up both and shows how to tell which one you have.

Choose your pen type

When you add a pen, the app asks how you want to track it. What you pick depends on what you know about the pen.

Pick Pen with known strength if you loaded or reconstituted the pen yourself and know the total amount and the total liquid volume, like 12 mg in 3 mL. The app tracks it by volume and works out each dose from the strength.

Pick Pen with set doses if it came prefilled to give the same dose a set number of times, like 0.5 mg per dose across four doses. The app counts down one dose at a time.

For a protocol dosed in units instead of mg, that second option becomes Pen you dial in clicks, which counts clicks and tracks no strength.

What do you have?
Vial
Reconstituted or premixed. You draw each dose from the vial.
e.g. 10 mg mixed in 2 mL
Pen with known strength
You know the total amount of medication and the total liquid volume in the pen.
e.g. 12 mg in 3 mL
Pen with set doses
You know the amount in each dose and how many doses the pen contains.
e.g. 0.5 mg per dose, 4 doses total

Add a known-strength pen

Enter the Total compound in the pen and its Total volume, like 12 mg in 3 mL.

That gives a strength of 4 mg/mL. The app uses it to size every dose for you.

Pick the pen cartridge

Set the Pen cartridge size to match yours. This is the scale you dial your dose against.

The app starts on a 3 mL cartridge. You can pick a different one for any single dose when you log it.

Add a set-doses pen

A set-doses pen is prefilled. It gives the same dose a fixed number of times. There is no volume for you to measure.

Choose Unopened for a new pen. Enter how many doses it holds, like 4.

If the pen is already in use, choose Opened and enter how many doses are left.

Enter the amount per dose

Amount per dose is the amount in one single dose, like 0.5 mg. It is not the pen's total. It is not a strength like mg per mL.

This is the easy one to get wrong. If you enter the whole pen's amount here, the app thinks each dose is huge. The pen then looks like it lasts far longer than it should.

The Each pen holds line multiplies your dose by the count so you can check it. At 0.5 mg across four doses, it reads 2 mg.
